Lucky Swallows at V&A Dundee: From Recycled Ocean Plastic to Best Seller

Lucky Swallows at V&A Dundee: From Recycled Ocean Plastic to Best Seller

Every idea has a moment when it stops being an excitable chat over coffee and scones and starts to feel real. For Lucky Swallows, that moment came when V&A Dundee became our very first stockist.

No pressure then.

The Lucky Swallows, made from recycled ocean plastic, launched at Scotland’s home of design and promptly took flight. We’re hugely proud (and still slightly astonished) that they’ve since become one of V&A Dundee’s best-selling design products, both online and in store.

Designed in Scotland. Made from Recycled Ocean Plastic.

Lucky Swallows were never intended to be just decorative wall art. Swallows are ancient symbols of hope, safe passage and new beginnings - ideas that feel especially relevant now. Creating them from recycled ocean plastic was a deliberate choice: transforming discarded material into something optimistic, enduring and full of meaning.

Each Lucky Swallow represents a small act of positive change - proof that sustainable design can be joyful, tactile and beautifully made.

Why V&A Dundee Was the Perfect First Stockist

For V&A Dundee to support Lucky Swallows from the outset felt significant. Not just a yes to a product, but a vote of confidence in a bigger idea:
that contemporary Scottish design can be responsible without being worthy, and playful without being throwaway.

Seeing the Lucky Swallows resonate with visitors from around the world - museum-goers, design lovers, gift buyers - has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

A Best-Selling Sustainable Design Gift

People choose Lucky Swallows for all sorts of reasons:

  • as design-led wall art

  • as a sustainable gift

  • for their symbolism of luck and return

  • or because they love the idea of ocean plastic given a second life

That combination of story, material, symbolism and design has helped make them a firm favourite with V&A Dundee customers, both in the museum shop and online.

From Ocean Waste to Design Favourite

We’ll always have a soft spot for V&A Dundee. They were the first to say “go on then” and give Lucky Swallows their moment. Watching them soar in such an iconic design destination has been a genuine pinch-me moment.

From recycled ocean plastic to best-selling Scottish design object.
Not bad for a small flock of swallows.
